Overview

The Egyptian Numerals converter turns a base-10 integer into the hieroglyphic numerals used in ancient Egypt β€” staff strokes for 1, heel bones for 10, coiled ropes for 100, lotus flowers for 1000 and so on up to a million. The result is rendered with Unicode Egyptian hieroglyph characters and can be copied straight into a slide or worksheet.

How it works

The Egyptian numeral system is decimal and additive β€” symbols are simply repeated and summed, with no positional notation. The conversion algorithm divides the input by each power of ten in turn (1,000,000 then 100,000 then 10,000 down to 1) and emits the matching glyph that number of times.

The symbol set: vertical stroke (1), heel bone (10), coiled rope (100), lotus flower (1000), pointing finger (10,000), tadpole or frog (100,000) and "heh" god holding palm fronds (1,000,000). The Unicode block U+13000–U+1342F covers all of these, so the result is plain text rather than an image.

FAQ

Why are some numbers so long?

Because the system is additive rather than positional, a number like 999 requires nine 100-glyphs, nine 10-glyphs and nine 1-glyphs β€” 27 symbols in total. Egyptian scribes used a cursive shorthand (hieratic) for everyday writing to keep things compact.

Did the Egyptians have a symbol for zero?

Not in their numeral system. They had a word and a hieroglyph ("nfr") used in accounting for a balanced ledger, but no positional zero. The converter doesn't render a glyph for zero.

What about negative numbers and fractions?

Egyptians wrote fractions using unit fractions like 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 with a special "mouth" glyph above the number. Negative numbers were expressed in context rather than as signed values. The converter handles only non-negative integers.

Will the hieroglyph characters display in any browser?

Modern browsers with Noto Sans Egyptian Hieroglyphs or another Unicode-aware Egyptian font handle them. If your system shows boxes, install a Unicode hieroglyph font.

Is this the same as hieratic numerals?

No. Hieratic is the cursive script developed later and uses different glyph shapes. The converter outputs the formal hieroglyphic forms used on monuments.
