Cooking Conversions
Cups, tablespoons, fluid ounces, grams, °F/°C.
Overview
The Cooking Conversions tool handles the bread-and-butter unit changes every cook runs into: cups to tablespoons, tablespoons to teaspoons, fluid ounces to millilitres, grams to ounces and Fahrenheit to Celsius for oven temperatures. It's a single panel that covers volume, mass and temperature so you can stay in the recipe without opening a search tab.
It serves home cooks following an American recipe with a metric kitchen, bakers porting an old family recipe to grams for precision and food bloggers double-checking unit lines. Long-tail queries it covers include "how many tablespoons in a cup", "350 F to C oven", "grams of flour in a cup" and "convert ml to fluid ounces UK".
How it works
Volume conversions use the US customary definitions: 1 US cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 8 fluid ounces = 236.6 mL. UK / Imperial conversions are noted separately where they differ (the Imperial fluid ounce is 28.4 mL, not 29.6 mL). Mass uses the international avoirdupois ounce of 28.35 g.
Oven temperatures follow F = C × 9/5 + 32 with the standard "gas mark" markings shown for UK ovens. For ingredient-specific conversions (a cup of flour weighing less than a cup of sugar), the tool uses the USDA reference densities and notes that volumetric measures are inherently approximate for solids.
Examples
1 cup → 16 tbsp → 48 tsp → 8 fl oz → 237 mL
350 °F → 177 °C → Gas mark 4
1 cup flour (all-purpose) → 120 g
1 stick butter (US) → 113 g → 1/2 cup → 8 tbsp
FAQ
Why is the UK fluid ounce different from the US one?
They were defined independently. The UK fluid ounce is 28.4 mL and there are 20 in an Imperial pint. The US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL with 16 in a US pint. Use the right one for the recipe's origin.
Is a cup of flour always 120 g?
Roughly. The USDA uses 125 g; King Arthur uses 120 g; sifted flour can be as light as 105 g. Weighing flour gives consistent results regardless.
What's the difference between weight ounces and fluid ounces?
A weight ounce is mass; a fluid ounce is volume. They coincide only for water — a fluid ounce of honey weighs about 1.4 weight ounces.
Why are oven temperatures rounded?
Most ovens are accurate to ±10 °C anyway, so 350 °F is presented as 175 °C or 180 °C interchangeably depending on the publisher.
How precise are tablespoon and teaspoon measures?
A US tablespoon is exactly 14.79 mL and a teaspoon is 4.93 mL. They are usually rounded to 15 mL and 5 mL in metric kitchens, which is the convention many European measuring spoons follow.
