Overview

The Tip Calculator works out how much to tip on a restaurant bill and splits the total across any number of people. Type the bill, pick a tip percentage and a party size, and you get the tip amount, total bill and per-person share.

It is built for everyday diners, travellers in countries with different tipping norms, finance-app developers building expense flows and event hosts splitting a large group bill fairly. Mental percentages get awkward fast; the calculator removes the guessing.

How it works

The tip is bill * tip_percent / 100. The total bill is bill + tip. Per-person share is total / people. The calculator also reports the per-person tip and per-person subtotal separately so you can see exactly where the money goes.

Some people prefer to round the per-person share up to a clean number; the calculator can show both the exact split and a rounded suggestion that keeps everyone honest.

Examples

Bill $50, tip 15%, 1 person
   → tip $7.50, total $57.50
Bill $120, tip 20%, 4 people
   → tip $24, total $144, per person $36
Bill $85.40, tip 18%, 3 people
   → tip $15.37, total $100.77, per person ≈ $33.59
Bill $30, tip 10%, 2 people → tip $3, total $33, per person $16.50

FAQ

What's a standard tip percentage?

In the US, 15-20% is typical for restaurant service. Many other countries tip less or include service in the bill. Pick a percentage that matches local custom.

Should I tip on pre-tax or post-tax?

Either is acceptable. Tipping on pre-tax is slightly more generous to the diner, post-tax is slightly more generous to the server. The calculator works on whichever value you input.

How do I split unevenly?

The basic calculator splits evenly. For unequal shares, divide the bill by item first, then apply the same tip percentage to each share.

What about service charges?

If the bill already includes a service charge, you can leave the tip at 0% or add a small extra for exceptional service.

Why is rounding the share useful?

Awkward per-person numbers like $24.37 are inconvenient when paying cash. Rounding up to $25 each leaves a generous extra tip without the maths.
