Two Truths and a Lie
Random themes to seed Two Truths and a Lie rounds.
Overview
Two Truths and a Lie helps you run the classic icebreaker by giving each player a theme to seed their three statements. Instead of standing in front of the room frozen because you cannot think of anything interesting about yourself, you draw a theme — childhood, travel, jobs, embarrassing moments — and build your three statements around it.
It is the small mechanical tweak that makes the game actually work. Themes prompt memory, which prompts good answers, which makes the lie harder to spot. Use it at orientations, team off-sites, classroom intros, and friend-group nights where new people are joining.
How it works
Each tap pulls a theme from a curated bank. The player then comes up with three statements within that theme — two true, one false — and shares them with the room. The room debates which is the lie before the player reveals.
Themes are short prompts ("a place you have lived", "a job you have held", "a thing you can do that surprises people"). They never give the answer; they only direct the player toward a category of stories that tend to produce strong rounds.
Examples
- Theme "childhood": "I once broke my arm jumping off a swing. I have an identical twin. I learned to ride a bike at age four."
- Theme "travel": "I have been to fifteen countries. I missed a flight in Tokyo. I have eaten fried tarantula."
- Theme "jobs": "I worked as a lifeguard one summer. I once met the CEO of my company by accident. I trained as a sommelier."
- Theme "skills": "I can solve a Rubik's cube in under a minute. I can juggle three balls. I can name every US state in order."
FAQ
How does a theme make the game better?
Themes nudge players away from generic statements toward specific stories, which makes the lie harder to identify and the round more fun.
Will I see the same theme twice?
Each tap is independent. The bank is large enough that repeats in one session are uncommon.
Is this for kids?
Themes are family-friendly. Younger players may need a hand crafting their three statements.
Can a player pass on a theme?
Yes. Tap again for a different theme if a player draws something they cannot work with.
Do I have to use a theme?
No. The classic game works without one. Themes are an optional aid for groups that are stalling.
