Haiku Generator
Random three-line haiku from curated word pools.
Overview
Generate a random three-line haiku at the click of a button. Each result follows the classic 5-7-5 syllable pattern and is assembled from curated pools of nature imagery, seasonal words, and quiet observational phrases — the spirit of traditional Japanese haiku rather than a mechanical word salad.
Creative-writing teachers prompting students, designers needing placeholder poetry for layouts, app developers populating demo content, and anyone wanting a small moment of calm in their day all use it. The output is short enough to copy into a journal, a card, or a slide without editing.
How it works
The generator picks three fragments — a 5-syllable opening image, a 7-syllable middle line that develops the scene, and a 5-syllable closing observation — from themed pools tagged by season and mood. Each pool is hand-curated so the lines fit together more often than not. Templates ensure grammatical agreement and avoid awkward repetition.
Examples
Quiet morning rain
softens the world to a hush
the last leaf lets go
Frost on the window
the cat watches one small bird
finch and frost both wait
Old pond, lily green
a small splash where the frog jumps
silence returns whole
FAQ
Are these traditional Japanese haiku?
They imitate the English-language haiku convention of 5-7-5 syllables. Classical Japanese haiku use on (sound units), not syllables, and follow different aesthetic rules around kigo (season words) and kireji (cutting words).
Why do the syllable counts sometimes feel off?
English syllable counting is fuzzy — "fire" can be one or two depending on dialect. The pools target a strict 5-7-5 but you may occasionally disagree with the count.
Can I save my favorites?
Copy the result and paste it into the Saved Templates tool to keep it. The generator itself doesn't store history.
