Vinyl Collection
Catalogue your vinyl records by artist, year and condition.
Overview
The Vinyl Collection tool is a catalogue for record collectors who want their shelf in a searchable list rather than a spreadsheet. Every entry stores album title, artist, year, genre and condition on the standard Mint through Poor scale, plus a notes field for pressing details, sleeve quirks, gatefolds or where the record was bought. It is built for hobbyists, not dealers, but the schema is rigorous enough to support insurance or trade conversations.
The header above the list shows total records and distinct artists, which is a good gut check on how concentrated your collection is around a few favourites. Filters by genre and condition, combined with full-text search and sorting by artist, title or year, make it easy to find every Blue Note pressing from a certain decade or every record below VG that needs replacing.
How it works
Add a record by entering its title, artist and any of the optional fields: pressing year, genre, condition grade and notes. Submit to push it into the catalogue. Each row in the list shows the artist, title and chips for year, genre and condition so you can scan the shelf without expanding each row.
The filter strip above the list combines genre, condition and a free-text search across title, artist and notes. Sorting by artist or title gives you a classic shelf order, while sorting by year is handy when chasing pressings from a specific era. Trash an entry when a record is sold, traded or replaced.
Examples
- Jazz classic: title "Blue Train", artist "John Coltrane", year 1957, genre "Jazz", condition "VG+", note "Blue Note BLP 1577, mono, 1990s reissue."
- Modern indie: title "In Rainbows", artist "Radiohead", year 2007, genre "Rock", condition "Near Mint", note "first pressing, gatefold."
- Reissue: title "Songs in the Key of Life", artist "Stevie Wonder", year 2017, genre "Soul", condition "Mint", note "Motown reissue, 2 LP set."
- Collection scan: filter genre to "Jazz" and sort by Year to walk through the catalogue chronologically.
FAQ
What does the condition grade mean?
The dropdown uses the common Goldmine-style scale, from Mint through Near Mint, VG+, VG, Good, Fair, Poor. Apply the most conservative grade you would accept on someone else's record.
Should the year be the pressing year or the release year?
Either is fine, but be consistent. Many collectors record the pressing year for re-issues and put the original release year in notes.
How do I track 7-inches and 12-inches separately?
Add the format to the notes field, or include "7"" or "12"" in the title to make searches obvious.
Can I split out custom genres?
Genre is free text. Anything you type appears in the genre filter for that record, so be deliberate about spelling.
Where does the artist count come from?
The header counts distinct artist values across all entries, ignoring case and blanks, giving a quick sense of how broad the collection is.
